Convening for Black Dance and Culture- Conference & Concert

The Convening for Black Dance and Culture is a biennial event that provides an experience for participants to learn through movement, engage with scholarship and connect with the broader arts community.

Participants from across the midwest will visit Detroit, on October 22-23, to partake in two days of intense workshops in traditional African dance and drum, taught by master dancers and drummers from Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, the Congo, and Brazil

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS & PERFORMING GUEST ARTISTS

T. Ayo Alston, Diadie Bathily, Celia Benevuttti, Dandha Da Hora, Caph Guei, Papa Assane M’Baye, Babacar M’Baye, Momar M'Baye, Biza Sompa and Detroit's own Nanou Djapo

CONCERT

Join us Saturday evening for a performance from Ayodele Drum and Dance from Chicago, IL., followed by an afterglow with sounds from Dj SassyBlaque.

Ayodele Drum and Dance exist to foster community from a feminine perspective through the study and performance of diasporic African drum and dance.

Our Conference theme - From Ally to Accomplice: Dancing Around Accessibility, Race, Gender, and Sex., will investigate how our actions as humans moving together in music and dance make us allies or accomplices in a larger narrative of change and justice.

TEMATE INSTITUTE FOR BLACK DANCE AND CULTURE SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES TO PARTICIPANTS, OR THE LOSS, THEFT, AND/OR DAMAGE TO THEIR PROPERTY WHILE PARTICIPATING IN ANY 2022 CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES. TeMaTe Institute for Black and Culture Conference 2022 is funded, in part, by a grant from Arts Midwest.
